Set-VMDisk -VM "my-vm-name" -SCSI -ControllerID 1 -LUN 1 -Path "pathtobackupdisk.vhd" Remove-VMDrive -VM "my-vm-name" -SCSI -ControllerID 1 -LUN 1 -Diskonly I've looked at the Hyper-V PowerShell module and executed the following: Oh and I'm doing a scheduled Full Server backup with Full VSS. The LaCie was a USB 2.0 device and not with large sectors, whereas the WD My Book is a USB 3.0 device (and by default it had 4k sectors though I stated I formatted it in 512 byte sector mode). That failed sometimes too but did not fail as consistently as the WD My Book. I was using a LaCie USB hard drive before this. The second virtual server also uses a VHD that resides on the WD My Book 1140, which exhibits the same behavior when backing up. And I've assigned the VHD as a SCSI hard drive. I'm using Hyper-V for the virtual server. But I used the format tool from WD's website, which had the option to format it using 512 bytes sector mode. The WD My Book 1140 is a disk that by default has a large sector size (Avanced Format, 4k). The first day after manually backing up it works also the next day but not the day thereafter, then I have to manually backup again. I've tried reformatting the VHD and re-assigning permissions, but to no avail. When I use Windows Server Backup (2008 R2) in one of my virtual servers to backup each day to a VHD that resides on a USB storage device: WD My Book 1140 the backup fails with "The system cannot find the file specified".
